Gundry MD Total Restore ingredients analysed

Total Restore, a dietary supplement manufactured by Gundry MD, claims to combat leaky gut through the use of a blend of natural ingredients. Although increased permeability of the intestinal lining can potentially allow harmful toxins to enter areas of the body where they should not, the link between this process and chronic diseases outside the gastrointestinal tract remains uncertain. As a result, leaky gut is not widely recognised as a medical diagnosis.

At present, there appear to be no interventions that have been shown to be effective in improving the function of this barrier or altering the progression of associated diseases. However, Total Restore may offer potential benefits in other areas. Each serving of three capsules contains the following ingredients:

Let us now look at the available research on some of the key ingredients.

Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in many biochemical reactions. Consequently, a deficiency can lead to a number of undesirable effects. Total Restore includes zinc because of its suspected role in promoting weight loss, energy and cognitive function. Low zinc levels have been associated with obesity, increased BMI and larger waist circumference in premenopausal women.

In a randomised trial, a daily dose of 30 mg of zinc for 4 weeks reduced BMI and body weight in obese individuals. In addition, a daily dose of 150 mg of zinc was found to protect against cognitive decline in people aged 70 years or older, compared with a placebo.

Black pepper

Black pepper may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and disease-fighting properties. In Total Restore, black pepper may act as a prebiotic, supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. In overweight people, a dose of 6mg of black pepper was found to be effective in reducing BMI and body fat.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine (NAG)

NAG, derived from shellfish, has been suggested to protect the digestive tract from the damaging effects of gluten. In a laboratory model, NAG was shown to be effective in reducing the damaging effects of gluten from rye, barley and oats on small intestinal cells from 26 gluten-intolerant children.

L-Glutamine

Glutamine, an amino acid, is commonly found in supplements that claim to improve immune function, support digestive health and promote brain function. The inclusion of L-glutamine in Total Restore may be based on its purported ability to improve cognitive function. However, doses as high as 2,000mg have been observed to have a negative effect on an individual's ability to perform reaction time tasks. Even at high doses, this ingredient does not appear to be effective for the above purposes.

Cinnamon bark

Cinnamon bark is often included in dietary supplements for its purported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and disease-fighting properties. While a review of 10 trials found that doses ranging from 120 mg/day to 6g/day effectively lowered fasting blood glucose levels for periods of 4 to 18 weeks, evidence for its digestive benefits is limited.

Magnesium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (MBH)

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is an exogenous ketone, meaning it is produced outside the body. It is probably included in Total Restore, like other Gundry MD products, for its potential use as an energy source. However, the body relies primarily on carbohydrates for energy in a normal diet, which means that fats are not used for this purpose. Therefore, the purported ability of MBH to increase energy and promote brain function is only applicable when carbohydrates are not present.

Berberine

Berberine is a plant-derived ammonium salt that may have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and anti-diabetic properties. In a randomised trial, people with metabolic syndrome who took 500mg of berberine three times a day for 3 months experienced remission of the syndrome, improved insulin sensitivity and reduced waist circumference.
